Lviv is the largest city in Western Ukraine, located 70 kilometers from the border with Poland. It is one of the oldest and the most original and peculiar cities of the country. Fair enough, this city is considered to be the keeper of the Ukrainian culture, traditions and statehood. Turbulent and rich history of Lviv during the lasts seven and a half centuries has created its unique appearance, harmoniously combining the old and the modern. Nowadays, it is one of the most beautiful and attractive cities in Ukraine.
The first mention of Lviv dates back to 1256. Its founder is considered to be the prince Danilo Galitsky, who named the city after his son Lev. Due to its advantageous geographical position Lviv immediately became lure for conquerors. Throughout its history it passed from hand to hand: to Poland, to Austria-Hungary, back to Poland, to the Soviet Union. In 1991 Lviv became a part of independent Ukraine, and to this day it bears an unofficial title of its cultural and spiritual capital.
Lviv is the major sports center not only of the western region, but throughout the country. Despite the fact that its athletes successfully partook in the Olympic Games, various European and World Championships, the favorite sport of Lviv’s citizens is football. It was here a hundred years ago, the first football match in Ukraine took place exactly in this city. In order to commemorate this important event in one of the city parks recently appeared sign "Lviv is the birthplace of the Ukrainian football." Today, the city has two professional football clubs – "Karpaty" and "Lviv".
Taking into account such long and strong tradition of football of the Carpathians region the UEFA’s choice to hold EURO 2012 exactly in Lviv doesn’t surprise. Next summer new up-to-date stadium specifically built for EURO 2012, will hold three matches of group B.
How to get. Today, Lviv is air connected with a lot of European countries. In particular, its International Airport regularly receives flights from Warsaw, Wroclaw, Krakow, Prague, Munich, Frankfurt, Athens, Tel Aviv, Vienna, Naples, Barcelona, Istanbul and Moscow.
However, the most democratic option preferred by many tourists: get low cost airlines to Poland (Krakow, Pshemyshl), and thence by road to the city. It takes 3.5 hours to get to the city by train from Pshemyshl and 11 from Krakow. There also are a regular bus connection between Lviv and these Polish cities. Also, you could get to the city from other neighboring countries as Romania, Hungary and Slovakia.
You could get to Lviv by train from Europe. Just use trains from Warsaw, Wroclaw, Prague, Vienna, Berlin, Bratislava and Budapest.
Also it is possible to get to the city by car. Today there are many crossings border checkpoints between Ukraine and Poland: Medyka – Shegini, Budomizh – Hrushiv, Zosin – Ustilug, Korchova – Krakovets, Smolnikov – Boberka.
It is not so difficult to reach other EURO 2012 host-cities from Lviv. They are connected by rail and from Kiev and Donetsk to Lviv, in addition, arranged air flights. However, the most convenient option is to use high-speed trains, which will be launched in Ukraine, directly before the start of the Championship. Therefore, it would take 4 hours to get to Kiev, 6.5 hours – Kharkov, 7 hours – Donetsk.
